Grand Old Partisan commemorates the Homestead Act, signed by President Abraham Lincoln, May 20th 1862.
It had been written by the Republican Speaker of the House, Galusha Grow, and passed by the GOP-controlled 37th Congress.
Two hundred seventy million acres in the Plains states – the size of Texas and California combined – were allocated to farmers who agreed to settle there and improve the land. This measure had been part of the Republican National Convention platform. Page 75 of Back to Basics for the Republican Party explains that Democrats had intended to create slave plantations there instead.
