Grand Old Partisan spotlights William Knowland, born June 26th 1908. His father served five terms in Congress. Entry to politics was making speeches for the Harding/Coolidge campaign. He attended the GOP’s 1932 national convention, then won elections for the state house and senate.
Knowland chaired the Republican National Committee from 1940 until drafted during WWII. He rose to be Majority Leader after being appointed to a U.S. Senate vacancy. Dwight Eisenhower considered replacing Nixon with him for the re-election campaign. He backed the President’s policies and voted for the GOP’s 1957 Civil Rights Act. Following this came a losing bid for Governor.
In 1974, relationship woes and gambling debts led to his suicide by gunshot.
