Samuel Parker – Hawaii’s first Republican National Committeeman

Grand Old Partisan honors Samuel Parker, born in the Kingdom of Hawaii, June 23rd 1853. His paternal grandfather, immigrated from Massachusetts, had established a substantial farming and ranching business. The three other grandparents were Natives.

Political activity began with service on the royal council. In 1891, Parker was named foreign minister. He helped avoid bloodshed when, two years later, the monarchy was overthrown.

Upon annexation by the United States, Parker joined the GOP. He attended the 1900 Republican National Convention, conferred with President William McKinley, and narrowly lost for congressional delegate. In 1902, he met with President Theodore Roosevelt and was selected National Committeeman.
