"an old-style Republican who believed that the GOP was the ship and that all else was the sea"
Grand Old Partisan honors Roscoe Conkling Simmons, born in Mississippi, June 20, 1881. His father, a school principal, named him for Republican Senator Roscoe Conkling. His uncle, Booker T. Washington, started him off as an office boy for Republican Senator Mark Hanna.
Graduating from the Tuskegee Institute, Simmons worked for the Pensacola Daily Press, then the Chicago Defender. During WWI, he reported from Europe on conditions of African-American soldiers. Back home, this fiery orator headed the GOP-aligned Lincoln League.
"A driving force behind the party's lock on the African-American vote from the early 1900s through to the Great Depression," Simmons conferred with Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. He attended three Republican National Conventions and seconded the re-nomination of Herbert Hoover. In 1936, the RNC named him to its speakers bureau. His journalistic career finished with the Chicago Tribune.
