Grand Old Partisan salutes George von Lengerke Meyer, born in Boston, June 24th 1858. He achieved success in banking, utilities and manufacturing. Political activity began on the city council. This savvy businessman became speaker of the state house.
In 1899, the Massachusetts GOP selected him National Committeeman. Meyer was Ambassador to Italy during the William McKinley administration. Theodore Roosevelt named him Ambassador to Russia, then Postmaster General. While serving as Navy Secretary for William Howard Taft, he oversaw the beginning of naval aviation. The destroyer USS Meyer bore his name.
