Grand Old Partisan commemorates the first black-owned newspaper in the South. April 30th 1862, two African-American Republicans established in New Orleans a patriotic tri-weekly newspaper, L'Union. Louis Charles Roudanez and Paul Trévigne took this bold action after Confederate rebels lost control of the city.
Roudanez, a doctor educated at the French Medical Academy and Dartmouth, provided the financing. Trévigne, a schoolteacher, was editor. Both men were civil rights activists and benefactors of emancipated slaves. For the next two years, L'Union editorialized on behalf of Louisiana’s African-American community.
L'Union was in French. In 1864, they began publishing the bilingual La Tribune de la Nouvelle Orleans, the first daily newspaper published by African-Americans.
After two years, the bi-lingual New Orleans Tribune replaced it. The two newspapers, printed at the same building, "strove to give voice to and unite the desires of Louisiana African-Americans."
Roudanez and Trévigne were free men of color. They went on to co-found the state GOP. A memorial plaque avoids mentioning their party affiliation.
