Grand Old Partisan spotlights the heroism of Bob Dole. April 14th 1945 – while battling Nazis in Italy – he was severely wounded while trying to rescue another soldier. Before losing consciousness, this courageous lieutenant managed to pull two others to safety. A medic wrote on his forehead, with his own blood, the letter M – indicating that he had already received an injection of morphine.
It took three years of hospitalization and nine operations until Dole could walk again. He did, though, lose use of his right arm. Ascent to Republican leadership began with election to the Kansas state house in 1950.
