Grand Old Partisan honors John Alley, born in Massachusetts, January 7th 1817. Apprenticed to be a shoemaker, he set up his own factory. Public service began as town councilman, then state legislator, then delegate at a constitutional convention. The anti-slavery Free Soil Party nominated him for Congress.
Alley joined the state GOP at its formation and in 1858 won first of four congressional terms. This skilled operative spearheaded efforts to secure enough Democrat votes to pass the 13th Amendment. April 1860, he delivered a classic speech: Principles and Purposes of the Republican Party. Receiving his vote were the Homestead Act, the Transcontinental Railroad, the Freedmen’s Bureau and the 1866 Civil Rights Act.
