William Sewell, heroic New Jersey Senator

Grand Old Partisan salutes William Sewell, born in Ireland, December 6th 1835. The enterprising orphan immigrated at fifteen. Merchandising was his early career.

Outbreak of civil war, Sewell recruited volunteers and enlisted as captain with the 5th New Jersey Infantry. His regiment fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He survived two wounds and received the Medal of Honor.

Union restored, business acumen focused on railroads, banking, shipping and electrification. Political activity began in the legislature, where he rose to be senate president.

In 1881, the legislature elected him a U.S. Senator. Sewell chaired his delegation at seven Republican National Conventions. He won another Senate term in 1895. President William McKinley offered to make him a general during the Spanish-American War.
