Grand Old Partisan spotlights the National Civil Rights Convention. December 9th 1873, one hundred seventy-five Black delegates gathered at an auditorium in Washington, DC. They urged a continuation of Reconstruction efforts to protect former slaves from their Democrat oppressors. Their top concern was passage of what became the GOP’s 1875 Civil Rights Act.

Frederick Douglass, John Langston, George Downing, and all seven Black Members of Congress were among Republican luminaries in attendance. That evening, President Ulysses Grant and Senator Charles Sumner hosted the entire group at the White House.
