Grand Old Partisan salutes Francis Marion Drake, born December 30th 1830. Outbreak of civil war, this patriot left the family milling business to enlist as captain with the 36th Iowa Infantry. He survived gunshot wounds and rose to brigadier general.
Peace restored, Drake studied law and became a successful banker and railroad executive. In 1881, he founded and endowed a university, named in his honor. He was delegate at the 1888 Republican National Convention.
July 1895, the state GOP nominated him for Governor. Elected by a large majority, Drake focused on upgrading infrastructure. Later years were devoted to a GOP-aligned veterans organization, Grand Army of the Republic.
