Erasmus Shattuck, the first Republican Chief Justice of Oregon

Grand Old Partisan honors Erasmus Shattuck, born December 31st 1824. He attended Vermont University, studied law in Georgia and practiced in New York. Further ambition led him to Oregon, arriving February 1853.

Public service began as county school superintendent. At the territorial convention for writing a state constitution, Shattuck voiced opposition to slavery. He next served in the legislature. In 1861, President Lincoln named him U.S. Attorney. Following year, he was elected to the supreme court, becoming Chief Justice in 1866. Voters later returned him to the Supreme Court.
