Grand Old Partisan commends Alvin Hawkins, born December 2nd 1821. This ambitious lawyer won a term in the state house and backed John Bell, a fellow Tennesseean, for president in 1860.
Hawkins opposed secession, and during the Civil War served in the Unionist Governor's administration. President Abraham Lincoln named him U.S. Attorney for West Tennessee. Peace restored, a Republican Governor appointed him to the supreme court. He briefly served as consul at Havana.
Thanks to a divided Democratic Party, Hawkins won the 1880 gubernatorial election. He persuaded the legislature to repay fully the state debt. Even his opponents praised him for honesty and earnestness.
