Grand Old Partisan highlights Republican dedication to improving the lives of Black youth. November 26th 1908, Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the Twelfth Street Colored YMCA Building in Washington, DC. The institution had been founded by Black Republican civil rights activist Anthony Bowen.
In a formal ceremony involving "many prominent persons of both the white and colored races," the President spread the first trowelful of mortar. He said to a Black workman standing nearby: "Come here. I want to shake hands with you," and continued, "I always like to shake hands with the man that does the work." Roosevelt encouraged White men to stand by "the colored man who possesses those qualities which, if possessed by a white man, would entitle him to be called a good citizen."
Three years later, President William Howard Taft attended a fundraiser for this YMCA, at Howard Theater. Among the donors was Republican luminary Julius Rosenwald. Taft’s Secretary of War, Henry Stimson, opened the facility in 1912.
