Theodore Penland, the Grand Army of the Republic’s final leader

Grand Old Partisan salutes Theodore Penland. Outbreak of civil war, this patriotic teen enlisted in the 152nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry. His regiment deployed to West Virginia.

Union restored, Penland settled in Oregon. Throughout many decades, he remained active with the Grand Army of the Republic, a GOP-affiliated veterans organization. His political beliefs were Republican and among his fondest memories was seeing Abraham Lincoln.

In 1935, the state GAR elected him its leader. Thirteen years later, he became national leader. Death came for the GAR’s final Commander-in-Chief on September 13th 1950, at age one hundred one.
