Grand Old Partisan commemorates founding of the Pennsylvania Republican Party. November 1854, anti-slavery activists gathered in Towanda at the home of David Wilmot. This former Congressman urged them to establish Republican organizations in their counties. Attendees included Alexander McClure, who later chaired the state party; Andrew Curtin, later elected Governor; congressional powerhouse Thaddeus Stevens; and Simon Cameron, Senator and Ambassador during the Lincoln administration. Wilmot also became a Senator.
Progress was slow, however, as a Whig had just won the governorship and opponents of the Democrats were still reluctant to unite. A call for convention was issued to "the citizens of Pennsylvania, without regard to former party distinctions, who are willing to unite in a new organization to resist the further spread of Slavery and the increase of the Slave power."
September 5th 1855, three thousand people, from local Republican organizations, met at Pittsburgh city hall to form the state GOP. David Wilmot served as its first Chairman. Following year, several Republicans were elected to Congress. October 1858 first saw election of Republicans to statewide office, as Supreme Court Judge and State Treasurer.
