Grand Old Partisan salutes John Bricker, born September 6th 1893. He studied law at Ohio State University and served as lieutenant during WWI. Being named assistant attorney general in 1923 started his political career. Appointment to the public utilities commission followed six years later.
Notwithstanding a Democrat landslide, Bricker was elected Attorney General in 1932. In 1938, he won first of three two-year terms as Governor. Among his achievements were turning a budget deficit into a surplus and devolving many government functions to municipalities.
The 1944 Republican National Convention nominated him for the vice presidency. Bricker, who would have been a superb presidential nominee, campaigned vigorously. He denounced Democrat depredations: "Not only has the New Deal depleted our resources, recklessly spent our money, but it has undermined the very spiritual foundations of our government."
In 1946, Bricker won first of two Senate terms. Six months into office, a former Capitol policeman attempted to murder him. At the 1952 Republican National Convention it was he who withdrew the name of fellow Ohioan, Senator Robert Taft, and called for unanimous nomination of Dwight Eisenhower for President. Bricker voted for the GOP’s 1957 Civil Rights Act. The elder statesman participated in President Reagan's re-election campaign.
