Grand Old Partisan salutes William Cogswell, born in Massachusetts, August 23rd 1838. He went on a two-year voyage around the world, then studied at Harvard Law School. Outbreak of civil war, this patriot recruited volunteers and enlisted as captain. Gallantry led to command of the state’s 2nd Infantry Regiment, which fought at Antietam and Gettysburg.
Peace restored, Cogwell was mayor of Salem and state representative and state senator. In 1887 began first of five congressional terms. Receiving his vote were the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, the Land-Grant Colleges Act and the Forest Reserve Act. He attended the 1888 and 1892 Republican National Conventions.
