Wallace White, the first U.S. Senate Majority Leader in Fourteen Years

Grand Old Partisan honors Wallace White, born in Maine, August 6th 1877. After college, he worked for his grandfather William Frye, president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate. Law studies followed.

White won six congressional terms. In 1930, he was elected to first of three Senate terms. This man of conscience opposed the New Deal and voted against FDR’s nomination of a Klansman, Hugo Black, for the Supreme Court. Majority Leader in the late 40s, he balanced between heavyweights Robert Taft and Arthur Vandenberg.
