Philippe Régis Denis de Keredern de Trobriand

Grand Old Partisan salutes Philippe Régis Denis de Keredern de Trobriand. Age twenty-five, he emigrated from France and settled in New York City. His first profession was journalist.

Outbreak of civil war, Trobriand recruited French-speaking volunteers. August 28th 1861, a Republican Governor commissioned him colonel of the state’s 55th Volunteer Infantry. His regiment fought at Williamsburg, Gettysburg and Appomattox. President Lincoln promoted him to brigadier general.

Union restored, Trobriand commanded troops in Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. He garnered acclaim as a talented painter of Native Americans and landscapes. October 1874, President Grant ordered him and his regiment to Louisiana, to defend the Republican state administration from racist Democrat thugs trying to overthrow the government.
