Grand Old Partisan praises Harrison Reed, born in Massachusetts, August 26th 1813. Relocating to frontier Milwaukee, he founded the towns of Neenah and Menasha and published an avowedly Republican newspaper. His next step was publishing Madison's Wisconsin State Journal.
In 1861, Abraham Lincoln appointed him to a Treasury Department position. Two years later, the President transferred him to Florida as tax commissioner, then postal agent. He married a teacher for emancipated slaves.
In 1868, the Florida Republican Party nominated him for Governor, and he won. His administration made considerable progress in restoring the state's economy and government finances. He also did his best to protect African-Americans from their Democrat tormentors. Reed appointed the nation's first African-American state cabinet official and commissioned him Lieutenant Colonel of the militia. He survived two attempts at impeachment.
After his term, he edited a magazine, the Jacksonville Semi-Tropical Monthly. President Benjamin Harrison named him postmaster of Tallahassee. During his final years, Reed served in the state house.
