Grand Old Partisan salutes Ely Parker, born in upstate New York to Seneca Indian parents. Graduating from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, this "extraordinary intelligent" man worked as a civil engineer at canals and other infrastructure projects. Outbreak of civil war, Ulysses Grant helped him attain a captain’s commission. This talented engineer participated in the siege of Vicksburg and was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
Parker wrote out the surrender document signed at Appomattox. General Lee said "I am glad to see one real American here," and his reply "We are all Americans." He remained Grant’s private secretary thereafter. President Grant named him Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Until death on August 30th 1895, he worked for the New York City police department.
