Grand Old Partisan salutes Albert Woolson, the last surviving Civil War veteran. October 1864, he enlisted as drummer in the 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery, deployed to Tennessee. The war ended before his sixteenth birthday.
Peace restored, Woolson was carpenter, then boiler inspector and electrician. He remembered having seen President-elect Lincoln in Albany, New York. His political affiliation was Republican.
Death came on August 2nd 1956, at age 106. Thus ended the venerable organization Grand Army of the Republic. President Eisenhower observed:
"The American people have lost the last personal link with the Union Army. His passing brings sorrow to the hearts of all of us who cherished the memory of the brave men on both sides of the War Between the States."
