Republicans legalized the Metric System

Grand Old Partisan commemorates the Metric Act of 1866, signed on July 28. It had been written by John Kasson, the Republican who chaired the House Committee on Coinage, Weights and Measures.

He noted that "the metric system is already used in some arts and trades in this country, and is especially adapted to the wants of others. Its minute and exact divisions specially adapt it to the use of chemists, aphothecaries, the finer operations of the artisan, and to all scientific objects."

The law had been passed by the GOP-controlled 39th Congress. Use of the metric system for business transactions and other purposes was thereby permitted, but not required.
