Grand Old Partisan commends Republican efforts to eradicate a disease common in southern states. Pellagra is caused by malnutrition, specifically the lack of niacin (vitamin B3). Poor folk fell victim to it because of dependence on low quality food.
July 25th 1921, President Warren Harding called for action. He directed his Surgeon General to report immediately on the situation along with proposed solutions. He also requested engagement from the head of the Red Cross.
Democrats were outraged! Among those complaining were Carter Glass, of Virginia, and James Byrnes, of South Carolina. They were worried about bad publicity harming investment and tourism. Glass rose to be U.S. Senate president pro tempore, and Byrnes went on to be Supreme Court Justice and Secretary of State.
