Republicans passed a federal law against debt-slavery

4686284F-CD73-49A4-996E-8FE54DE62BAB Grand Old Partisan acclaims a Republican victory against the Democratic Party’s slave system. The 13th Amendment, written and passed by Republicans, had outlawed slavery in 1865. Even so, Blacks and Hispanics often had to work in horrible conditions akin to slavery. As described on page 104 of Back to Basics for the Republican Party, Democrats were trying to evade the abolition of slavery by sentencing their victims to lifetime servitude.

March 2nd 1867, the GOP-controlled 39th Congress passed the "Anti-Peonage Act." It had been introduced by Senator Henry Wilson, a future Vice President. The law prohibited forcing people to work, usually in oppressive conditions, in order to pay off debts.

"All laws or usages of any state by virtue of which any attempt shall hereafter be made to establish, maintain or enforce, directly or indirectly, the voluntary or involuntary service or labor of any persons as peons, in liquidation of any debt or obligation, or otherwise, are now null and void."

This law is still on the books and has served to liberate many people being held in virtual slavery.
