Grand Old Partisan honors John Lewis, born near Charlottesville, March 1st 1818. Democrats hated him for, at the Virginia secession convention, refusing to sign its ordinance of secession.
In 1869, Lewis was elected Lieutenant Governor, on the 'True Republican' ticket. Following year, the legislature elected him a U.S. Senator. Receiving his vote were the (anti-) Ku Klux Klan Act, Yellowstone National Park and the 1875 Civil Rights Act.
Lewis served as federal marshal during the Grant and Hayes administrations. In 1882, he again won the lieutenant governorship. A brother was Ambassador to Portugal and another brother U.S. Attorney, in GOP administrations. His son became a prominent Republican newspaper editor.
