Grand Old Partisan salutes Morgan Hamilton, born in Alabama, February 25th 1809. He moved to Texas in 1830 and fought for independence from Mexico, then served as the new Republic's minister of war. After statehood, he managed a wholesale business in Austin.
Hamilton steadfastly opposed slavery, and with civil war approaching, called for rejecting secession. President Abraham Lincoln appointed his brother, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, brigadier general in the Union Army.
Peace restored, Morgan Hamilton joined the Republican Party, becoming leader of its Radical faction intent on complete abolition of the Democrats' slave system. He was state comptroller and delegate at a convention tasked with writing a new state constitution. When the state was re-admitted in 1870, the legislature elected him a U.S. Senator. Receiving his vote were the (anti-) Ku Klux Klan Act, Yellowstone National Park and the 1875 Civil Rights Act.
