"respected by both races as a conscientious legislator, a voice of compromise and impartiality in an age of turmoil and partisanship, an orator of extraordinary ability"
Grand Old Partisan honors James Bland, born near Appomattox, February 27th 1844. His father, a free black, had purchased freedom for his wife so their son would not be enslaved. He studied at a missionary school in Union-controlled Norfolk.
After the Civil War, Bland was elected to a state convention for writing a new constitution. While voting for most Republican civil rights measures, he opposed disenfranchising former Confederates. He was delegate at three Virginia GOP conventions. In 1869, the Republican Governor named him assistant assessor for internal revenue. Later that year, he won election to the state senate. Improving education was his top priority.
Bland died tragically, along with dozens of others, when the third floor of the state capitol building collapsed. He was just twenty-six.

The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government. The remainder is an enthralling history lesson that I will never forget. For years, we have all been misled about the true nature of the GOP. This is the real deal! Read it and be proud!" "Your book is a national treasure. I'm always recommending it."
