Grand Old Partisan spotlights Geary County, Kansas. It was originally named Davis County in 1857 for Jefferson Davis, then Secretary of War in a Democrat administration.
During the Civil War, local patriots resented their county being named for the Confederate chieftain. They sought a change to Lyon County, for Nathaniel Lyon, heroic Union Army General killed fighting the rebels. Next, they petitioned for the name Lincoln County.
Newspaper editor George Washington Martin, appointed postmaster by President Lincoln, led the effort. Finally, on February 28th 1889, a Republican Governor signed a bill giving the county its current name. The illustrious John Geary had been territorial governor of Kansas, Union Army General and Republican Governor of Pennsylvania.
