Grand Old Partisan salutes Zophar Ramsdell, born November 21st 1816. His career began as a shoemaker. In 1857, abolitionist Eli Thayer persuaded him to help establish an anti-slavery community in western Virginia. During the Civil War, he was captain with the 5th West Virginia Infantry.
Union restored, Ramsdell served in the legislature and wrote the new state’s public school law. President Ulysses Grant named him postal inspector. He was delegate at three Republican National Conventions.
His house, which had sheltered escaping slaves, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Now a museum, it "is believed to be full of spirits and is used for paranormal investigations."
