William Worthington, the first Republican Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky

Grand Old Partisan salutes William Worthington, born November 9th 1833. He was a Kentucky farmer. Outbreak of civil war, this devoted Unionist recruited volunteers and commanded the state’s 22nd Volunteer Infantry. His regiment battled through Louisiana and Mississippi.

Peace restored, Worthington managed an iron foundry. His political career began as county judge, then state senator. In 1894, he was elected lieutenant governor, as running mate of Kentucky’s first Republican governor.
