Grand Old Partisan admires the 26-inch Great Equatorial Telescope at the U.S. Naval Observatory. It first gazed skyward on November 20th 1873. Two decades later, the telescope was moved from Foggy Bottom to its present location.
Senator Charles Drake, a Missouri Republican, had convinced the GOP-controlled 41st Congress to appropriate $50,000 for the telescope and $14,000 for the tower and dome.
In 1877, renowned astronomer Asaph Hall used this telescope to discover Phobos and Deimos, the moons of Mars.
