Jonathan Tarbell, first Republican Chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court

Grand Old Partisan salutes Jonathan Tarbell, born in upstate New York, November 6th 1820. Publishing newspapers followed practicing law. During the Civil War, he commanded the state’s 91st Volunteer Infantry, which battled through Louisiana, Florida and Virginia.

Peace restored, Tarbell relocated to Mississippi. In 1870, the Republican governor appointed him chief justice of the supreme court. His rulings protected Blacks from their Democrat oppressors. After six years on the bench, President Ulysses Grant named him deputy comptroller of Treasury Department.
