Grand Old Partisan honors George Loring, born November 8th 1817. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, he practiced surgery at a sailors hospital and then in the Massachusetts state militia.
Dr. Loring campaigned against Republicans in 1856 and 1860. He became a recovering Democrat when, disgusted by the Party of Slavery, he endorsed Abraham Lincoln for re-election. His eulogy of the Great Emancipator was a classic.
Union restored, Loring won election to the state house, then the state senate. He chaired the Massachusetts GOP eight years and was delegate at three Republican National Conventions. In 1876, this eloquent orator won first of two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. President James Garfield appointed him Commissioner of Agriculture, and President Benjamin Harrison named him Ambassador to Portugal.
