Grand Old Partisan honors James Flanagan, born in Virginia, September 5th 1805. At age nine, his family moved to Kentucky. There he raised horses and owned flatboats along the Ohio River, as well as practiced law.
Flanagan relocated to Texas in 1844, repeating business success. While a Whig state legislator, he opposed secession. During the Civil War, this staunch Unionist avoided having anything to do with the Confederacy.
Peace restored, Flanagan became a Republican, and advocated for railroad construction. Delegate at two state conventions, he was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1869. Texas readmitted, the GOP-controlled legislature elected him a U.S. Senator. Aligning himself with the Radical Republicans, he backed the Ulysses Grant administration. His son Daniel Webster Flanagan followed him as a Republican Lieutenant Governor.
