Grand Old Partisan lauds Henry Stanton, born June 27th 1805. His father, who manufactured cloth sold in the West Indies, owned a slave. The boy resolved to "become the champion of the oppressed colored races of my country."
Stanton practiced law in Boston, then studied theology and wrote articles for abolitionist publications. He married suffragist Elizabeth Cady. They honeymooned at an anti-slavery convention in London.
He co-founded the Free Soil Party and was elected a New York state senator. Frederick Douglass called him "unquestionably the best orator in the anti-slavery movement." Stanton helped establish the state GOP. President Lincoln appointed him Deputy Collector of the Port of New York. Remainder of his life focused on editing a newspaper.
