Grand Old Partisan salutes Joshua Newbold, born May 12th 1830. In his early twenties, he moved from Pennsylvania to frontier Iowa. There, he farmed and managed a store. Outbreak of civil war, this patriot enlisted as captain of Company C, 25th Iowa Volunteers. His regiment battled from Arkansas to North Carolina.
Union restored, Newbold engaged in merchandising and cattle-raising. He prided himself on being a life-long Republican.
In 1871, Newbold won election to the state house. Four years later, he was elected Lieutenant Governor. He became Iowa’s tenth chief executive when the legislature sent his running mate to the U.S. Senate. His eleven months in office focused on tax reform. Later years, he was a small-town mayor.
