Grand Old Partisan salutes Isaac Hawkins, born near Nashville, May 16th 1818. Three years after passing the bar, he enlisted as a lieutenant during the war with Mexico.
Hawkins was delegate to the Washington Peace Conference, an attempt to avert secession and civil war. In 1862, he helped recruit a U.S. cavalry regiment among Unionists of western Tennessee and served as its colonel.
Tennessee re-admitted to the Union in 1866, this former Whig won first of three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hawkins was delegate at the 1868 Republican National Convention. He wrote the law establishing the Buffalo Soldiers. Also receiving his vote were other GOP achievements including the 14th and 15th Amendments.
