Grand Old Partisan lauds Henry Crapo, born in Massachusetts, May 24th 1804. His career began with teaching and surveying. He also was a town councilman and state militia officer.
In 1856, Crapo moved to Michigan and bought a thousand acres of swamp. This canny businessman drained the land, planted pines trees, and launched a successful lumber business. He also helped establish a railroad.
Crapo launched his political career in 1860, being elected mayor of Flint. Two years later, he was elected state senator. Just two years after that, the Michigan GOP nominated him for governor.
Crapo won first of two terms. Achievements of his tenure including ratifying the 13th Amendment, reducing government expenditures postwar, and supporting the Radical Republicans in their efforts to transform the South into a free society. At an emotional ceremony on July 4th, 1866, he accepted the Civil War battle flags of Michigan's regiments.
The governor's son, William Wallace Crapo, became a Republican Congressman from Massachusetts. His grandson, William Durant, founded General Motors. His first cousin five times removed, Mike Crapo, is currently a Republican Senator from Idaho.
