Grand Old Partisan salutes Charles Nash, born a free Black in Louisiana, May 23rd 1844. His profession was bricklayer. He served as a Union Army sergeant major during the Civil War, losing most of a leg in battle.
Peace restored, Nash helped establish the state GOP and the Ulysses Grant administration made him an inspector at the New Orleans customs house. In 1874, he won a term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Shamefully, the Democrat Speaker placed him on just one committee and limited him to a single speech. The eloquent civil rights advocate took that opportunity to condemn Democrat racism and terrorism:
"A government which cannot protect its humblest citizens from outrage and injury is unworthy of the name and ought not to command the support of a free people. We are not enemies, but brethren… America will not die. As the time demands them, great men will appear, and by their combined efforts render liberty and happiness more secure."
Squabbling within the Louisiana GOP cost Nash re-election. He returned to bricklaying, and later years to making cigars.
