Grand Old Partisan salutes Benjamin Franklin Rice, born in western New York, May 26th 1828. After studying law, he moved to Kentucky and won a term in the state house. In 1860, he relocated to Minnesota.
Outbreak of civil war, Rice enlisted in the state’s 3rd Volunteer Infantry, rising to major. This regiment helped capture Vicksburg. He later was judge advocate at Little Rock.
Peace restored, Rice stayed in Arkansas. He co-founded the state GOP and became its first chairman.
Upon readmission in 1868, the GOP-controlled legislature elected him to the U.S. Senate. He chaired the mining committee. Receiving his vote were the 15th Amendment, the [anti-] Ku Klux Klan Act] and Yellowstone National Park. Endorsing the Democrat nominee over Ulysses Grant's re-election ended his political career. Practicing law in Colorado, New Mexico and Washington, DC filled out the remainder of Rice's life.
