Grand Old Partisan salutes William Prosser, born in Pennsylvania, March 16th 1834. He started out mining in California. Outbreak of civil war, he returned home and enlisted as quartermaster of his state’s 15th Cavalry. Victories led to command of the 2nd (U.S.) Tennessee Cavalry. His regiment defeated a rebel raid in Alabama.
Peace restored, Colonel Prosser bought a farm near Nashville. After a term in the state house, in 1868 he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Receiving his vote were the (anti-) Ku Klux Klan Act and other GOP achievements. He focused on improving infrastructure and education. President Ulysses Grant named him postmaster. He also published a Republican newspaper.
March 1879, President Rutherford Hayes named him special agent of the general land-office for Washington Territory. Prosser contributed to economic development of the Yakima valley. Later years, he was treasurer of Seattle. The seat of Benton County is named for him.
