Grand Old Partisan honors Warren Bristol, born March 19th 1823. Within two years of settling in frontier Minnesota, the ambitious lawyer was elected county prosecutor. July 1855, he chaired the founding convention of the Minnesota GOP. He also was delegate at the 1864 Republican National Convention. Following this were three terms in the legislature.
April 1872, President Ulysses Grant appointed him to the New Mexico territorial supreme court. Over twelve years, the judge contended with a broad range of legal issues. In his most famous case, he sentenced Billy the Kid to hang for murdering a sheriff. This desperado escaped by killing two deputies, but then was tracked down and shot by another sheriff. After retiring, Bristol promoted statehood.
