Grand Old Partisan honors Robert De Large, born in South Carolina, March 15th 1842. His parents were mixed-race free Blacks. His profession was tailor.
This young Republican attended the 1868 constitutional convention. His next positions were state representative and land commissioner. November 1870, De Large won a term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He denounced Democrats for "committing murder, arson, or other outrages upon the lives, liberty, and property of the people" and the "wicked deeds of these outlaws, who shrink from no cruelty, who spare no sex nor station to carry out their devilish purposes."
Tuberculosis claimed his life at age thirty-one.
