Grand Old Partisan applauds Republican dedication to fiscal prudence. March 18th 1869, President Ulysses Grant signed the Public Credit Act. It had been sponsored by Senator John Sherman and passed by the GOP-controlled 41st Congress.
People who had lent money to the U.S. Government during the Civil War would repaid in gold – as promised. Paper money issued on an emergency basis would be withdrawn from circulation. Democrats had wanted to cheat patriotic bond-holders by paying them with those "greenbacks" of lesser value.
This new law was a success. Inflation lessened, foreign trade soared, and the government’s credit worthiness strengthened.
