Grand Old Partisan appreciates Republican respect for the environment. March 3rd 1891, Benjamin Harrison signed the Forest Reserve Act. It had been written by Kansas Republican Senator Preston Plumb and passed by the GOP-controlled 51st Congress.
This law gave the President authority to "set apart and reserve, in any state or territory having public land bearing forests, in any part of the public lands, wholly or in part covered with timber or undergrowth, whether of commercial value or not, as public reservations."
Watersheds were to be protected from flooding and erosion while timber resources preserved from over-exploitation.
Within weeks, the President established the first Reserve, near Yellowstone National Park. His administration added fourteen more.
