Grand Old Partisan honors Jonah Kalanianaole, of the Hawaiian royal family, born March 26th 1871. While studying in Santa Cruz, he introduced surfing to California. After graduation, he returned home and worked for the islands' government. The young prince was heir to the throne, though Hawaii had been a republic for five years when it became part of the United States in 1898.
Kalanianaole joined the Republican Party four years later and served as territorial delegate to Congress the next nineteen years. Under his leadership, the GOP dominated local politics and organized the islands into counties. In 1919, he was first to introduce a statehood bill. Among his other achievements were bills to dredge Pearl Harbor and to establish Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as well as passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, to improve conditions for the native population.
He was delegate at five Republican National Conventions. Hawaii celebrates Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day every March 26th.
