Grand Old Partisan praises Hallie Quinn Brown, born to former slaves in Pittsburgh, March 10th 1850. Age four, she relocated with the family to Ontario, not returning until fourteen. She attended Wilberforce College, then taught school in Mississippi and South Carolina. Booker T. Washington hired her as dean of women at Tuskegee Institute.
It was oratory that brought her to national prominence. Brown delivered speeches across the country and Europe on women’s suffrage, civil rights and temperance. She headed several organizations for Black women.
This dedicated humanitarian addressed the GOP’s 1924 national convention and campaigned for Calvin Coolidge. Her brother, Jeremiah Brown, was a prominent Republican statesman.
