Grand Old Partisan honors George Myers, born in Baltimore, March 5th 1859. His parents were free Blacks. Denied entry to college by Democrats, he became a barber and moved to Cleveland.
This savvy entrepreneur prospered managing the city’s most modern barbershop, with several dozen employees. His establishment was a center of political activity for Mark Hanna, titan of the Ohio GOP. Myers served on the state committee and was delegate at three Republican National Conventions. He rallied support for presidential candidate William McKinley, afterward declining several political appointments. Later years, Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft sought his advice.
